At this time of year, the AFor Umbria Forestry Agency has begun the second phase of conservation efforts aimed at restoring the habitat of the saproxylic beetle Lucanus cervus (stag beetle) in the IT5210004 Boschi di Pietralunga Special Area of Conservation.
The project involves selective thinning of conifers with the aim of restoring the original broadleaf forest habitat.
Artificial senescence microhabitats, such as disposable cubic and pyramid-shaped piles of oak logs, will also be created in the area to allow the stag beetle to complete its life cycle.
