Natura 2000 and waters
The Water Framework Directive (2000/60 EC) provides for the integration of protection measures of the waters with the conservation measures of species and habitat dependent on the aquatic environment required by the Habitats Directive on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora (92/43/EEC), and by the Birds Directive on the conservation of wild birds (147/2009/EC).
Over the last few years various initiatives have been undertaken in Italy and Europe to integrate the three European directives by managers of river basin districts together with the authorities responsible of the Natura 2000 network and biodiversity conservation. In some cases a strategic approach was adopted while in others actions aimed at the conservation of particular species were promoted, using innovative technologies or facilitating the exchange between different areas related to water quality, nature and soil conservation. Others have focused on creating synergies in the monitoring or in the reporting under the three Directives.
Communità Ambiente together with the association Gruppo 183 organized, under the auspices of the Integrated LIFE project GESTIRE 2020, the seminar entitled “Integration of water and nature, lessons learned and new perspectives” aimed at strengthening synergies and promoting exchanges of experience between experts and public administrators responsible for the application of the three Directives. The seminar was held in Rome on July 6, 2016, and was attended by the DG Environment of the European Commission, the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea, the Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), the regions implementing integrated projects, river basin authorities, universities, environmental associations, Italian and Spanish, trade unions, private companies that offer services in these areas, and experts from various parts of Italy.

Seminar on the integration of EU water and nature directives
During 2020, Comunità Ambiente produced a comparative study on the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive in the Tiber (Italy) and Tagus (Spain) river basins districts, based on the information published in the two water districts.
