ARSIAL in collaboration with the Department of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences of the University of Tuscia, as part of sub-measure 10.2.1 of the RDP, has carried out a study to evaluate the contribution of the feeding behavior of the Esperia Pony in plant communities of Ampelodesma in the prevention of fires on the Ausoni-Aurunci mountains in southern Lazio.
The Pony of Esperia is one of the native breeds of Southern Lazio, with reduced diffusion and high risk of genetic erosion, registered in the Re
gional Voluntary Register held by ARSIAL and protected by the L.R. 15/2000 of the Lazio Region. It is a breed adapted to semi-arid environments and contests such as those of the Ausoni-Aurunci and an excellent grazer of shrubs and vegetation of low nutritional value such as Ampelodesma mauritanicus. Ampelodesma is grazed by the Pony of Esperia in the juvenile stages of the plant, containing its development at a minimum height and such as not to spread fires in summer. This evidence, if associated with a very good nutritional value, could guarantee the use of the Pony of Esperia from an environmental point of view and as a fire-fighting function.
