The amount allocated by Italian regions to the environment declined by more than 15% between 2009 and 2010:4.329 million euro, equivalent to 0.28% of GDP and 71.6 euro on average per inhabitant. This is what emerges from the Italian Statistic Institute (Istat) report on the environmental investments of regional administrations. The largest share of these resources is dedicated to the use and management of water resources (Puglia and Basilicata invest more), soil remediation, underground and surface waters (especially in Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia), the protection of biodiversity (especially in Piedmont and Lazio), landscape and wastewater management.
Capital expenditures prevail over current expenditures, representing 58% of the total. 63% of environmental investments was aimed at reducing pollution (air emissions, water discharges, waste, soil pollution) and degradation (loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, salinization), while the remaining 37% was used for the protection from phenomena of exhaustion of the stock of natural resources.
