The use of fertilizers by Italians farmers is diminishing while the use of natural fertilizers and soil improvers is increasing. This is what emerges from a report by Istat, the national statistics institute, according to which in the decade 2002-2012 fertilizers distributed decreased by 5.8 % overall (50.7000000 to 47.5000000 tons),compared with a reduction of 2 % of utilized agricultural area.

The fertilizers decreased by 25.6 % (42.1000000 to 31.3000000 tons), while organic fertilizers that improve soil characteristics  increased by 50.6 % compared to 2002 (8,3000000-12.2000000 ton).

Overall, the dynamic distribution of fertilizers is consistent with the EU’s agricultural policy, which tends to promote the use of organic fertilizers instead of synthetic mineral products,in order to improve the production quality, the preservation of health and respect of the environment.
